Seven Corporal Works of Mercy

Each week beginning on the weekend of February 26th, we will try to fulfill one of the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy  set forth by our Church. Listed below are each of these corporal works and an indication of how we hope to fulfill them.

  • February 26 - Cloth the Naked: New clothes, including undergarments, will be collected at all Masses for men, women, and children.
  • March 4 -  Feed the Hungry: We will have a special food drive to collect food for neighborhood shelters.  Grocery bags will be available the weekend of February 26
  • March 11 - Welcome the Stranger:  A Parish Reception after all the weekend Masses will be held to welcome new parishioners to our St. Matthew family and to visit with old friends.
  • March 18 Provide Drink for the Thirsty:  A collection of baby formula will take place at all masses in order to help local woman’s shelters and Carolyn’s Place.
  • March 25 -  Bury the Dead:   A memorial Mass will be celebrated for all parishioners who died in 2010.  All family members are invited to attend.  A reception will follow this Mass in the Father Blaney Room.
  • April 1 - Care for the Sick:  We will have a Special Mass of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.  Parishioners will be asked to invite and provide transportation for individuals who are in need of the sacrament.  A reception will follow this Mass in the Father Blaney Room.

We are all very excited about our Lenten Program; however, we need your help in preparing for these special events.

Please contact Monsignor Ginty if you can help in any way. Many hands make a lot of work much easier and certainly more enjoyable.

Our parish offers a bereavement ministry to help those who are grieving the loss of a loved one.  Our 10 weeks bereavement group New Day/New Life will begin on June 4th at the resource Center from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.  Please call Rita at 860-583-6674 to register or to obtain more information.  The program is free and open to all.

Please extend this invitation to members of your family who might benefit from our bereavement ministry.

 Defending Our Religious Liberty

Religious freedom is a God-given right. It is protected in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights of our U.S. Constitution, which dates back to Dec. 15, 1791. The government should not be allowed to force people or groups to violate their most deeply held religious convictions. To quote Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the USCCB, “Religious freedom is our heritage, our legacy, and our firm belief, both as loyal Catholics and Americans.” This is not a Catholic issue, it will impact all religions.

Please contact the offices of your Congressional Representatives and United States Senators to express your opposition to the federal healthcare mandate. For addresses and phones numbers, please visit: www.ctcatholic.org or www.archdioceseofhartford.org.
